Starting Counselling
Beginning counselling can feel like a big step, especially if you’re unsure what to expect. This page is here to offer a gentle overview of how counselling with me works and what your first sessions might be like.
There’s no right or wrong way to start. You don’t need to have clear goals or the right words. We can take things at a pace that feels manageable for you.
What Counselling Can Feel Like
Counselling offers a space to slow down and talk openly about what’s going on for you. Some people come with something specific they want to explore, while others arrive feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or simply knowing that something doesn’t feel quite right.

All of that is okay.

My role is to listen, to help you reflect, and to support you in understanding yourself and your experiences more fully.
Session Format
Sessions last 50 minutes and take place either:

-
Face to face in Buckinghamshire, or
-
Online via Google Meet

We’ll agree the format together and can review this if your needs change.
Online Sessions
If we meet online, sessions are held via Google Meet.
You don’t need to download any software. I’ll send you a secure link by email before your session.

For online counselling, it’s helpful to:

-
Choose a private, quiet space where you feel comfortable speaking
-
Use a stable internet connection
-
Join the session a few minutes early if possible

If any technical difficulties arise, we’ll agree together how to proceed.
Before Your First Session
There’s nothing special you need to prepare.

You don’t need to plan what to say or share more than you feel ready to. It can help to arrive just as you are, whether that feels clear, uncertain, calm, or emotional.
After Sessions
People experience counselling in different ways. Some feel relieved, others thoughtful or tired, and sometimes emotions can feel a little closer to the surface.

All of this is a normal part of the process. We can always take time to talk about how sessions are feeling for you.
Practical Information
Before or at the start of counselling, I’ll share clear information about:

-
Confidentiality
-
Privacy and data protection
-
Session arrangements and cancellations

These documents are there to support transparency and can be read at your own pace. We can talk through anything that feels unclear.
Taking the Next Step
If you’re considering counselling or would like to talk things through before deciding, you’re welcome to get in touch.

We can explore whether counselling with me feels like the right fit for you, without any pressure or obligation.
